Late last week, the Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid released a memo giving guidance to institutes of higher learning on compliance with changes to the Clery Act. These changes were spurred by the authorization of the 2013 Violence Against Women Act. From the memo:

These statutory changes require institutions to compile statistics for certain crimes that are reported to campus security authorities or local police agencies including incidents of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. Additionally, institutions will be required to include certain policies, procedures, and programs pertaining to these crimes in their Annual Security Reports.

The memo continues on to state that institutions should make a “good faith” effort to comply with these regulations before they become official, and that the department should be contacted if there are any questions. To read the full memo and find out how to contact the department, click here.
